Fresh Looks for Famous Statues: Joint Substance x Marvelous Designer Contest Kicks Off

Contestants Will Design Clothing for the Classical Statues of David and Diana, With the Top Entries Earning Prizes Courtesy of NVIDIA

CLERMONT-FERRAND, France – May 14, 2018 – Allegorithmic, makers of the Substance tools, and CLO Virtual Fashion, makers of Marvelous Designer, are teaming up to launch a new contest, but with a very old twist. The “David & Diana: Apparel Creation Contest” challenges users to design and create original articles of clothing for two of the world’s most famous statues using Marvelous Designer and the Substance suite. From goth to futuristic space suits and everything in between, the only limit is the creativity of the contestant, with the best offerings earning their creators big prizes.

Contestants have the option of dressing Michelangelo’s David or Jean-Antoine Houdon’s Diana. Using Marvelous Designer, artists will create clothing and accessories for the models, then use Substance tools to texture bold new styles or recreate classic looks throughout history - the more unique, the better. Judges will select three “professional” winners and one from the “student” group, and the focus will be on creativity, originality and consistency. Winners will be announced during SIGGRAPH 2018.

“We’ve had a strong relationship with the team behind Marvelous Designer for a long time, and have been looking for a fun way to bring our communities together,” said Dr. Sébastien Deguy, founder and CEO of Allegorithmic. “Our mutual communities have grown closer as well, and this contest is a way to highlight how the tools best work together.”

Submissions are being accepted now and will continue to be received until June 26, 2018. The first place winner in the professional category will receive a NVIDIA Quadro P5000, a year of Substance Indie, and a perpetual license for Marvelous Designer Personal. Second and third place will receive both Substance and Marvelous Designer licenses, along with prizes to be named later. The top entry from the student category will earn its creator a NVIDIA P4000 along with both the Substance and Marvelous Designer licenses. Prizes are subject to change based on availability.

Judges for the contest include members of both CLO Virtual Fashion and Allegorithmic, alongside design experts from the sportswear and textile industries. They include: Gaëtan Aguado, Senior Manager Creation Technologies for Adidas; Alexandre Cailleaux, Design & Brand Management for Tex-Ray; Jay Park, Vice President of CLO Virtual Fashion; Sébastien Deguy, Founder & CEO of Allegorithmic.

Artists of all skill levels and experience are encouraged to compete. To help ensure the contest is open to all, Allegorithmic and CLO Virtual Fashion are offering free 30-day free trials of Substance Painter, Substance Designer and Marvelous Designer MD73.x. Artists can also download 10 free Substance Source materials to create their entries.

For those new to the tools, free video tutorials for Substance Painter, Substance Designer and Marvelous Designer are available. Additional resources can be found on the official contest page, including contest tips from the pros, guidelines on submissions and a complete list of rules.
