Allegorithmic Releases Substance Painter 2.1

3D Texturing Tool Now Compatible with Linux; UDIM Workflow Management for High-Res Assets

VENICE, CA. June 2, 2016 – Today, Allegorithmic releases Substance Painter 2.1 – the latest, free update to its popular texturer. Vastly used among game developers, Substance Painter 2.1 now includes support for Linux, 8K map exports and a smoother UDIM workflow that will make it even more appealing to VFX and animation productions.

“Customer requests have clued us into a simple fact: VFX artists want access to Substance Painter,” said Dr. Sébastien Deguy, founder and CEO of Allegorithmic. “These new features bring us one step closer to giving them exactly what they want.”

Substance Painter is a 3D painting application that allows you to paint PBR materials directly on a 3D model and apply advanced procedural effects such as realistic wear and tear. With Substance Painter 2.1, 3D assets can be produced at higher resolutions, with more details than ever before.

UDIM files can now be easily converted into Substance-ready texture sets within the Substance Painter workflow. Once converted, assets can be painted using a non-destructive, layer-based workflow before final exportation to the artist’s 3D package of choice. Additional support for 4K high-DPI monitors has also been added, making any extra detail that much easier to see.  

This update follows the recent integration of Substance Engine into Houdini 15, Allegorithmic’s first step into VFX compatibility. More features and improvements are currently under development.


Substance Painter 2.1 is available today and is free for customers with Substance Live subscriptions and Substance Painter 2.0 licenses. Allegorithmic offers an Indie license for $149 and a Pro license for $590. These can be downloaded now via Allegorithmic’s website. Substance Painter 2.1 currently works with Windows 7 and up, Mac OS X 10.10 and up, and Linux CentOS.
